Fyi, ice packs are absolutely allowed through security if (according to the TSA) being used to cool medication. See the last bullet in the first bulleted list on this TSA page or on this page:

Additionally, we are continuing to permit prescription liquid medications and other liquids needed by persons with disabilities and medical conditions. This includes:
...
Gels or frozen liquids needed to cool disability or medically related items used by persons with disabilities or medical conditions.
If you are still worried they might take it away, print out this page and ask for a supervisor. Also note that you do not owe TSA an explanation as to what your condition(s) or medication(s) are, just that they are medications which are required to be kept cool.

Of course, if we're going by the Britney Spears rule (who was allowed to take a cup of ice through security), ice packs should be allowed regardless because of what they are (a solid) and not because of the function they serve (cooling medication).
