I always fly through CAI to get to SSH and just get a regular visa. It's quite cheap (USD 15 IIRC) and easy to get at the airport, so I don't see it as a big deal. You have to go landside to change terminals for the flight to SSH.

I've never managed to find a convenient flight direct to Sharm, so even though that's my destination every time I go to Egypt, I've never done the Sinai visa.
