The schedule is certainly peculiar. Then the fact that there are two agencies (Amtrak and NJ transit) providing service, with Amtrak at a substantially higher cost, and you have to decide which to buy up front.

In a more developed country, it would be a coordinated service without such gaps, with a uniform ticket and price, which would be valid on any of the operators' trains. But then again, this is America, we got a ways to go to catch up to the rest of the world in these things.
