While you probably should have kept it, I'd take this approach: It's not your responsibility to keep the slip, but it is theirs. I'd tell them to refer to the slip that you filled out that noted said damage to the vehicle. Tell them that you reviewed the slip with their employee and that he reviewed the slip. Any damaged that the vehicle received happened before you rented it - and their documentation will answer any questions they should have in the matter.
If they don't have the documentation, then that's their responsibility. They should be having the conversation with the individuals who rented it before you did.

When I returned the car the agent questioned me about one or more of the dents, and I told him that it was in the exact shape it was in when I first saw it...and took out my slip I had filled out showing all the existing damage. At that point he appeared to be satisfied and we went on our way. So today, a week later, I get this letter indicating that they have received notification of damage or loss to my vehicle, and that they are investigating the claim. Obviously I'm pretty frustrated considering I didn't get a scratch on the car.
So I will call them on Monday to find out more about the extent of this alleged damage. But I had a couple of questions. While I did detail all the existing damage on the slip, I unfortunately threw it out a few days ago.

Is Alamo required to keep their copy on file in order to prove that the damage was not previously reported and therefor new? Also, I did take out the LDW/CDW insurance at a cost of $11.99/day (first time I ever did). Would that cover body damage to the vehicle? At the time I accepted it they were telling me that it would cover damage or break in to the soft top and loss of use stemming from damage or mechanical problems.
