You are not out of the pool for op-ups, but there have to be several factors in your favor. Do keep in mind the GA will pass you over for non award elite/high fare passengers first. Even with empty seats the GA will most likely keep it unoccupied rather than take your instrument. Of course if you don't ask you already know the answer. YMMV
P.S. GS can use instruments to upgrade award tickets.
