The past few days, the award calander for JFK to SYD is showing a lot more availability in lower to medium range for the next few weeks, so at least its promising that I'll still be going and wont lose my Virgin Blue airfare. Fingers crossed!
I'm sure you will get them. I did this once, only found 240k BE awards to Hong Kong for 2. I rationalized myself into pulling the trigger by thinking, that's what they are there for (my miles), It still isnt costing me anything, the The cash price is $14,000 so it is still a great deal, I will earn them back in a year...blah, blah, blah. After about a week I started to come to my senses and cancelled. As it turned out I found two BOS-HKG tix leaving one day earlier for 120k ea. Since then I always wait. If the trip is important then you can always book it and hope to find a better deal (within your 2 exempt change fees) but frankly I am finding better availability closer to the flight day. Best of luck but if I were a betting man (and by that I mean I absolutely am a betting man
) I would put 120k miles down on you getting a MUCH lower award by the time you want to go.
