It's perfectly fine to reserve rooms for someone else using your MR #. I've done it for my parents' anniversary stays in the past with no problems.

You will not earn elite-qualifying stays, but you will earn points on anything charged to the room.

The only way you'll be able to earn elite-qual stays is if you personally checked in to that room.
