MFU - paying for someone's flight not allowed?

Earlier today I tried to make a booking from LHR > LAX outbound in WT+, inbound in J (WT+ MFU'd) for 2 people on my BA AMEX.

It was news to me that because I have a household account I would be unable to book and MFU my colleague's flight on the way back with my miles (I was told I can only MFU people whose name appears on the household account....).

He had to book his flight himself and use his own miles.

Now I have to make another booking in WT+ to SYD for a colleague and want to put it on my AMEX to get the miles. I was told by the same operator that the flight must be paid for by the person who is flying in order to MFU it to CW.

I haven't done any MFUs for a while and have forgotten a lot of the rules, so forgive me, but I don't remember this one?

Surely he can upgrade with his miles after the booking if it's a solo booking under his name but booked/paid for by me? So long as it's booked on BA.com, I thought that it would be ok?
