I Don't think this is automatic - looks like local discretion. I spent 3 weeks non-stop in a Marriott in New England and couldn't get anything from them in the way of upgrade or extra facilities. That was despite the fact I was also spending about 1 week a month there for a period of 6 months.

Local rules seem to vary enormously!!
