I have done this many times, usually in Vegas. A quick look at the Las Vegas Convention Calendar gives all the big conventions and often links to the websites of the convention organizers where I've booked rooms at decent rates.

I've been an accountant, a nurse, and a member of the media. No one has ever asked for credentials. Just be sure not to do it with small groups.
