The advice to go to the dining room as soon as possible is a good one. Many people will do this to change dining times. I don't know about "tipping" the maitre'd in advance. I suppose it could get your name to the top of the list if they can't confirm right away. I do know the maitre'd asks for tips along with everyone else so tipping in advance may work.
