I wonder if the age of the Internet has made this less likely. In the old days, an airline could do a nice gesture like this and it could be kept relatively quiet. But now, if they were to do it for altflyer5, he/she could post it on FlyerTalk and Delta could be bombarded with people demanding that it be done for THEM too.

Word would get around fast that Delta is willing to bend its status rules, and then the question becomes where to draw the line. Sure, altflyer5 needs only 84 MQM's, but what about 200? Or 500? Or 1000? What's the definition of "close"?

I have the feeling that the service industry is tending more and more to follow their rules to the letter since it's all to easy to inadvertently set a precedent and open up some messy cans of worms.
