Another vote for Lonely Planet. They are not perfect and I will always check out other books for a destination, but for most trips LP are as good as the competition. Maps in LP are fairly basic and OK for planning, but buying a decent local map is always one of the first things I will do on arrival. Now that you can buy chapters and updates of LP books on-line this is a big advantage.
