You don't have to use expert flyer or pay the fee. Check aa.com for business class award inventory on the flights you want for availability. Not all fares allow you to "hold" the fare but require immediate purchase. If this is the case, I'd call the exp line and have them book both the flight and the upgrade at the same time to avoid possibly losing the upgrade waiting to call after purchase.
