What do you tip for hotels by country? Europe, Asia and other

Before people blast me and tell me to search old threads, I have done a search and haven't found the answer to my question. Maybe the answer is there but I looked at about 10 threads before starting one up and haven't seen on that answers the precise question I'm asking. Sorry.

I have an employee who loves to be generous (as long as it is not on his dime) and seems to tip a fair bit in both the US, Europe and Asia to chambermaids at hotels. We are a consulting firm and almost all of this is billed through to our clients but I am concerned that he is tipping $10 per day in some places and that this will some day catch the eye of a green eyeshade guy and we will hear about it. [We always fly business class, stay in nice hotels, etc. and are scrupulous about being reasonable and not excessive and clients never have a problem with our expenses and I want to keep it that way. I approve expense reports before they go to clients].

From the threads I've seen, it appears to be customary to tip $1-2 per day in the US in a normal hotel and $3-$5 per day for a luxury hotel. Does this seem to match your sense?

I had thought that in Europe, tipping was not appropriate for chambermaids, but there is certainly no clear answer in the FT threads on this.

What would be appropriate if anything in:

England
Ireland
France
Switzerland
Netherlands
Denmark
Sweden

China
Malaysia

Australia
Mexico

Thanks for your help.
