My experience is that if you have both rooms on a joint bill you will get credit for the full amount spent. This works well in the case of a family - extra room for kids, parents, etc. You will however only get credit for 1 night's stay.

Actually I've had the same experience at Hilton. Only 1 night's stay credit and one set of airline miles, but points for the dollar value of both rooms when combined on one bill.
