I presume if I rent from one of the majors (Hertz, Avis, etc.), then I don't have to go as far as that?

IIRC there are no close-in car rental lots; you have to go out to the main rental facility.

As for downtown Dallas, it is quite some distance from DFW (22mi). factor in the rush hour traffic and you probably wouldn't have much time (45-60 minutes each way)
