First of all, "common sense" and the TSA are mutually exclusive.
Second, the TSA doesn't care about bottles that don't appear to be tampered. Otherwise, there would be plenty of unopened bottles of water that would go through.
The TSA checks all the liquids that merchants sell, but somehow us passengers are not able to have the chance of getting the same screening as the for-profit folks do.
