Problem with not only AA but with all the legacies, is that they are burdened with flying short-hop commuter jets for connecting passengers into their hubs. Most other countries have high-speed rail that do those jobs which allow them to pour more of their capital into their premium international products. But our country hasn't seriously invested in that technology except for the NE Corridor, and even there we do not have a direct air-to-high-speed rail link like CDG or FRA. As such, the legacies are stuck with buying and maintaining ERJs and CRJs to feed their passengers from outlying areas.

If the Midwest Rail Initiative or the CA High Speed Rail system can really get its feet off the ground to directly feed passengers into airports it might alleviate things a bit. But with the way things are, I doubt it'll happen within the next decade or even the next fifty years.

And in the meantime, our country will be losing its competetive edge against French, German, and Japanese rail companies that are milking billions in profit from countries that express interest in HSR...
