I have seen this available FAR more in Europe and Asia than in the US. In fact I cannot remember the last time I saw a machine in the US. The last one I saw in FRA seemed to indicate that security did not need to unwrap the bag to utilize the X-Ray. They did make no guarantee about follow on security at other airports.
