I had the BA/BS with Superior Academic Achievement (don't remember exact name either), and started at GS-6 (Step 2 IIR). My senior thesis was directly relevant to the work; had to hand-photocopy entire 74pg hardbound original to be hired.

) I was the only one without a Masters, but they made about the same. It was a matter of considerable indignation in our department that the guys who carted patients' food from kitchen to ward—GEDs or HS grads mostly, but with points—were GS-9s or -10s. This was at a VA in the early 1980s.
They were represented by an engineering union; we were represented a nursing union.
Much later in life I did engineering-based work
as a volunteer. So much for superior academic achievement.
