there are lots of simple ways - you don't need to "waste" your miles on a redemption like that.
credit card activity counts, so even if you're going to cancel this card, make a transaction the statement period before. that way, you can extend your miles expiration up to a year.
beyond that, you can credit AA flights, rental cars, hotels, etc. I imagine you just might use one of those products in the next 3 (or 4) years.
