Better Battery Life only helps if you're operating under battery power. The OP is asking about plugged-in power. Turning off wireless would kind of defeat the point of using the in-flight WiFi...

Turning down screen brightness certainly helps when on battery power. I don't think it will help substantially on plug power. The disks have to spin at some point, which means the power draw may still exceed 75W if the battery is being charged, regardless of all the other settings.

Right now, the only solution I know should work 100% of the time is to remove the battery.

EmPower will most certainly power your machine... that's why Apple sells a cable for it. It may not charge the battery, however.
