Of course. If one airline were always the best value for everybody under all circumstances, it would be very difficult for other airlines to stay in business.

Frequent flyer programs have become very complex, and it is extremely difficult to master more than one. That is why FlyerTalk exists, and why I come here, to know the ins and outs of one program (in my case, it is AA). Information is always better than lack of information or assumptions. We get two types of posts from those new to the forum - the How Do I Do This questions and the I Assumed and Was Wrong rants. It is always more fun for us to answer the first ones, because with the rants it is too late for the information to be of any value. Rants often end with "I will never fly that airline again", and the answer is often to be careful that the door doesn't strike one's behind on the way out, because there isn't much constructive that we can say in response to such a rant.

If you had checked the BA forum, a quick search would have turned up this thread, now almost three years old: BA To charge up to £240 for extra bags!, which would have given you all the information you needed to make the best decision for you, and plenty of emotional support as well.

I know that you have sworn off BA, but if you should by chance find yourself on a Oneworld flight in the future, feel free to come here (if AA) or to the forum for the airline you are flying to find out how the rules apply to you.
