I remember many moons ago when barely in my teens, being in the bus depot in Limerick, waiting for my bus, when I noticed 2 tourists (whose first language was neither English nor Irish!) having what could be described as an animated discussion with a bus inspector.
They were pointing at one of the buses and insisting that they wanted to get on that bus and go to the destination listed on the front of the bus. God love the bus inspector but he was totally out of his depth, there were a lot of hand gestures and pointing to the ground.
It turned out that the destination listed was "Luimneach" (pronounced Limnuk by us but rhyming with peach as they said it)...which is the Irish for Limerick and he was pointing to the ground saying "Limerick, Luimneach, here, here".
All seemed to end well and the 2 backpackers took off into the city, and the inspector just walked off, shaking his head!
