I would have started by asking what the problem was, with a real interest in his answer - in the hopes of finding a solution. Of course, there's no excuse for his behaviour, but it would have helped to find out what was going on with him. That aside, the FA should not tolerate verbal abuse from passengers and should really have stepped in to calm the escalation.
I probably would have tried to reason with him had he not slammed his hand into the back of my seat and given me minor whiplash. After that happened, I was not interested in having a peaceful chat. Among other things, he was speaking really loudly with (IMHO) the intent of getting as many people as possible to notice him.
