Well, the French have Londres, Edimbourg and Douvres for London, Edinburgh and Dover: I guess they're just local variants of names of towns that have some significance. And what we call Copenhagen the Danes call København — which really just means "shop harbour", and you can more or less imagine that an English town might have been called "Market Harbour"...
