I would have reclined my seat but would not have gotten hit by this guy. I would have insisted that it was my right to recline and if push came to shove, I would have used my training on this guy so that I did not get hit.

However, you were absolutely right in opting to maintain peace and not escalating the situation. That was the right thing to do and from what this guy sounds like from your description, he would have taken some handling which not many can do. Shame on the FA on that Airline for not intervening.
