Sorry, but I didn't mean to imply that ignorance (including my own) is of no consequence. Just different.

For that matter, I don't intend to pass judgment on the Brits I mention even if my admittedly prejudicial suspicions are accurate. It's just an interesting (to me) observation of what seems to be a cultural distinctive. And I've often wondered to what extent it's responsible for some of the place name variations.
