They only work for one-ways or round-trips (one ways if there is no restriction on the code).
It just round trip AUS-FRA-AUS but not by the most direct route.
I want to use a discount code on a MR round trip AUS-FRA. The fare code will allow me to route via SFO on the outbound and LAS on the return. But the only way I can get it booked on aa.com is to use the multi-city booking page, so no box for the discount code.
