AC 111 diverted to YYC

Against my better judgement (after my last post), I'm going to post this thread.

A business contact of mine was on this flight today, (I was not, this is second hand info) and she stated that the flight was diverted "due to a lack of potable water and the toilets at 100% capacity" she was also told that they (?) "forgot to ensure enough water was loaded".

So, in all honesty, I am asking these questions:

1. The flight was 1 hour give or take out of YVR, was the diversion necessary?

Let me be clear on this next question, I do not ever ask for, nor does my contact care about compensation but it begs the question,

2. As this was an apparently clear error on AC's part causing numerous headaches for several hundred pax (321) should compensation be offered?

As a side note, she was not, nor was she aware of any compensation offered to any pax.
