Why can't Marriott bill a combination free/revenue stay correctly?

1. Long long time ago (Spring 2001, I think) I was staying 2 weekend nights at the Indy Marriott East, using one of the "Buy-one-get-one-free" certs that come in the member offers. Surrendered the cert upon checkin, got the bill, charged for both nights. Took the clerk about a half-hour to find the cert and fix the problem.

2. End of 2001, I stayed several nights at the Rivercenter in San Antonio. Also used a "Buy-One-Get-One-Free" cert from the elite offers booklet, in conjunction with Come-Out-And-Play Rates. This time I dealt with the cert the night before I checked out of the hotel. Received the bill, the free night was billed at the rack rate (!!). This time, it took 45 minutes to fix and required a long conversation with the manager. They never did find the cert. Perhaps the manager I spoke with the night before file 13'd it?

3. This past long holiday weekend, I stayed in the Renaissance Washington DC (the one next to the convention center). I arranged to pay for 2 nights and use 2 W14's. Got the bill yesterday, they didn't charge me for ANY nights. Yes, I did correct their mistake (Figured if they audited the bill and caught it later, they would charge me the rack rate or something grossly high like that), and again it took about a half-hour and management intervention to correct.

So why can't Marriott get combined Revenue/Free stays billed correctly? I'm 0 for 3 thus far....
