At that hour, the the Q33 runs every 15 minutes, and the Q53 runs every 10-12 minutes, so I would probably go that route if I were really looking to save some bucks. If it's very cold, or raining, or snowing when your friend gets to Jackson Heights, he could always opt to ride the subway into Manhattan, rather than stand outside waiting for the Q53.
Will your friend already have a Metrocard? If not, he can purchase a card for $4.50 (good for two fares) with a credit or debit card at the Metrocard vending machines located in the Central Terminal Building, just inside from the Q33 bus stop.
He will as I already suggested to him that he purchase for $8 a Metro Card at HB as he needs to pay $5 to ride the Airtrain from HB to the Terminal, that $8 gets him a card worth $9.20, so all he will need to do is add another .30 to it via the Booth which I will tell him he should do only @ the subway station if he ends up doing the Q33 & Q53 as otherwise his 9.20 card will have $4.20 left on it and that would be enough for 1 Bus and Subway @ $2.25 or a total of $7.25 being used off the $9.20 value
