At that hour, the the Q33 runs every 15 minutes, and the Q53 runs every 10-12 minutes, so I would probably go that route if I were really looking to save some bucks. If it's very cold, or raining, or snowing when your friend gets to Jackson Heights, he could always opt to ride the subway into Manhattan, rather than stand outside waiting for the Q53.

Will your friend already have a Metrocard? If not, he can purchase a card for $4.50 (good for two fares) with a credit or debit card at the Metrocard vending machines located in the Central Terminal Building, just inside from the Q33 bus stop.
