As far as I know, the international YBM upgrade bucket, the Z fare bucket, has nothing to do with your status. Anyone can upgrade when that bucket is available, either paying in miles or with a PMU if you happen to be a PM.

And buying the M ticket is a gamble unless the upgrade (Z) is availalble at the time of booking, assuming that cheaper coach fares are extant for the dates of travel.
