I got the exact same email from the W San Diego yesterday for my stay tonight. Again, checking spg.com, it looks like rooms are available to book in every room category, most of which (except Extreme Wow Suite) are eligible for upgrades. I understand (and appreciate) the idea of an email notification if you've been upgraded in advance, but I still don't understand the logic of sending you an email telling you you're NOT upgraded, especially when it looks like you could be.
