I'm lucky. I have been able to avoid NW metal when traveling in coach so the UG process has always been consistent for me. I really feel for those who are not getting their upgrades appropriately. If I had to go a month (or however long it will be) without any chance for upgrades I would simply pay for a coach seat on any ole airline and not remain loyal. This sucks and hopefully will not last much longer.
