I've used Oyster cards in London for a few years, and never had the misread problems I've encountered with the Metrocards--you don't slide them trough a slot (which must be periodically cleaned) as with MC's; you slide it over a reader. Also Oyster cards have a chip which keeps track of your usage, you can then go to any terminal and see the info.
