CNN did an article about travel a few months back and one of the topics was that many of the airlines are more willing in this down economy to status match. The airlines generally see it as winning over a valued customer. If you are smart about it and keep pushing them (in a polite and professional manner) you might be able to get a status match.

One of the keys to this is being able to demonstrate that you have held your status with the other airline for muliple years. Also, be able to demonstrate that the travel you have done over those years will continue with American (e.g., a minimum of 125K year after year).

Keep in mind if you are going to be traveling 100K or more butt in seat miles with American you are a valued flyer. Remind them of this and continually let them know that you are bringing your travel budget to American. If you get the right person you might be able to get it. The key is evidence of past travel and status as well as a high likelyhood of repeat travel with American.
