Funny, I have exactly the opposite experience for weekend trips. I always check all the rates as well and the federal gov rates, when available,
always beat the other rates I can find. (The AAA rate is hit and miss; some times it offers a discount and other times the AAA rate ends up being higher than the best promotional fare.)
