If you have silver and gold card holders who are still travelling when things get really rough you do everything you can to hold on to them. You don't try to squeeze more out of them. This is what I call the 'spreadsheet mentality'. The people running things start seeing columns of numbers and forget what their business is. If BA weather the storm they're not even going to know why their 'loyal' customers have gone elsewhere.
The comms I have seen lead me to believe that the charge only applies to exit seats in M & W. J is not listed as a cabin that anyone has to pay for the exit row in.
