The fact is; (if you purchase your tix with the Reserve card) that puts you at the top of your tier, regardless of the fare. The fare is second in consideration only when 2 or more pax w/i the same tier paid with the Reserve card.
I think it matters only if the pax are DR holders, not if the ticket was bought with a DR card. e.g., I may buy a ticket for my staff, that does not get them to the upgrade list. DR is a tie breaker. My ticket to LAX was with a Visa, but I still showed up as a DR when I got the card a few weeks later
Lastly, they need to decide what is more important.
If getting one person at least upgraded, SPLIT the reservation.
I did DCA-ATL-LAX and my SO was OK all the way as a Gold. I only got to ATL in the front.
If you want to be ahead of all other Silvers, (AFTER all other Golds) I hope you have a DR card, and hopefully, you two MAY get upgraded together ahead of all other silvers (not Y fares).
