If they split PNRs- the wife has a better chance of getting an upgrade since she will clear with the other Golds. If they stick together they both clear as silvers. Technically if there is 1 seat left for upgrade and they are on the same PNR, neither will get the upgrade and the seat could go empty (or NRSA/pay for upgrade). This is why I recommended they split the PNR if getting even one upgrade is important to them.
Were were miscomm... and we don't know from the OP how they paid; I just thew the Reserve Card info in as a just in case. Of course, seat inventory would need to be factored into the decision to stay on the same PNR + consider if they would or would not want to split up in the event one clears and one doesn't.
