I'm sure this is right, which is why the OP shouldn't seperate the PNR -- so there is at least a best chance of getting 1 UG as opposed to better change of getting 2 UGs. Does that make sense?
I think we are just misunderstanding each other.
If they split PNRs- the wife has a better chance of getting an upgrade since she will clear with the other Golds. If they stick together they both clear as silvers. Technically if there is 1 seat left for upgrade and they are on the same PNR, neither will get the upgrade and the seat could go empty (or NRSA/pay for upgrade). This is why I recommended they split the PNR if getting even one upgrade is important to them.
