I'll be flying on American Airlines and I believe it's out of Terminal 8. Would getting to JFK around 7-7:30 AM be okay if I check in online and print boarding passes at home, or would I need to get there earlier? I have a seat chosen already if that makes any difference, and I'd have one checked bag with me.

I've also never driven to NYC before. I'll be leaving from Pennsylvania (a bit north of Philadelphia, in Pottstown) and was wondering if you guys had any input on how bad morning traffic is going to JFK. Google Maps tells me to go PA Turnpike to NJ Turnpike to 95 North to 278 E to Belt Parkway (I'm not sure if there's an easier/shorter way as I'm not familiar with that drive at all). It says it's about 2 hours 15 minutes with no traffic. How much time do you think I should give myself to get there, assuming I'm leaving from PA in the early morning?

I really appreciate any help. I haven't flown out of JFK before so I'm really unfamiliar with getting there, drive times, etc.
Getting to the bag check line by 8:00 should be fine.

If you're driving with someone who will drop you off, you'll just need five minutes from the curb.

If you're parking, it will depend on which lot you use. My rule of thumb is, if returning after two nights or less, use the short-term lot, at the terminal, park ten minutes beforehand.

If using the long-term lot, you'll need to use the Airtrain. Park 25 minutes beforehand. There's just one lot, the signage from Belt Parkway should be adequate, park close to the station.

I've driven that route several times (son just started at Ursinus, Collegeville). From PA Turnpike, I prefer Route 1 through Princeton, more direct and cheaper, but 20 traffic lights. Connects to NJT via Route 18.

Then, I like the 440 across the Outerbridge Crossing to 278, just as direct and fast, and fewer tolls.

At that time traffic should not be so bad, as you're avoiding the direct approaches to NYC.

From PA Turnpike and Route 1, I would expect 3 hours. Probably less, but possibly more.

Have you tried Google Maps traffic function? Tells you the expected traffic on most roads at any time of the day and week. Amazing. That part is up to you. Good luck.
