I personally prefer Port Douglas to Cairns as it is more geared to the traveller, has a good range of restaurants and accommodation. I have always rented a villa when northern queensland and don't think you would have too much trouble getting one with a pool for the amount you are prepared to spend though it has to be said the AU$ is strong at the moment.
