If you're returning on the same day then you can checkin for the return flight at the same time you checkin for the outbound flight. I dont think you can checkin from a connecting flight if you have a stopover.
IIRC you can OLCI or SSCI for a flight on the same PNR that is within 24h of the flight you are OLCIing-in or SSCI-ing-in for, whether it is a connecting flight or the return segment of an outbound flight.
