From my experience, that is absolutely untrue. brunos states right.

Nevertheless, I might have observed a double account on the statement :
- the one of regular level miles (1:1)
- the one of partners (AF/KL, Hertz and Accor Hotels) level miles (1:1.4)

And I do not know how Amex handles a negative balance on the partners account (for example you bought a fully refundable AF ticket you then cancelled).
