I agree with you moman, I do the same thing... too many people bringing on everything and there is never enough room so I check it and carry on my laptop.
On the flip side, those carrying on eliminate the risk of lost/delayed/damaged bags and don't have to wait for them at the far end. Of course, this should be done with compliant, even if large, bags. Our bags are compliant, so no reason/desire to check.
