As for your other wish list, yes, they certainly would be pleasant, but not economical. The majority of, for example, BA's fleet fly a maximum of a little over 2 hours.

In the States it is a bit different... low-costs have brand new aircraft (WS, B6), offer free snacks (WS, B6), no not charge for checked baggage (WS, B6), have modern, dedicated Terminals (B6 at JFK T5, WS at LUV) and even have FFP's. Legacy carriers have old, dirty aircraft, charge for any piece of baggage - nothing is free (actually my BMI Gold card rescues me^), do not offer anything to eat - not even snacks; I know what I say - I fly with US Airways quite frequently.
And B6 has lots of flights ex JFK with travel time of 90 minutes or less - and IMO these still have PTV's with free DIRECTV and Satellite Radio
